Chapter 15

Carly awoke a few hours later, groggy and depressed.  She was happy that she had gotten some sleep, but now that she was awake, her brain went into overtime.  She started thinking about things that she didn’t want to think about— losing Nick’s baby, her and Derek breaking up, Nick finding her and Derek kissing and then storming off to the airport and the fact that Nick would be gone for four long days.  It seemed like an eternity.  She looked at her watch.  It was 5:30.  He was probably halfway to Nashville by now.  Her heart ached at the thought of him having all that free time to think about what he had walked into to find a few hours ago and what he must be feeling now.

She felt lost and alone and she wanted the man she loved to be with her right now, holding her and comforting her.  Carly opened the top cupboard where they kept the liquor and looked at the selection.  She winced when she saw the Tequila.  Hellll, no.  The thought of it made her sick—too many memories; not all of them bad—the ones with Nick making love to her were wonderful—but still, it wasn’t an appealing concept.  She closed the cupboard and instead grabbed a bottle of Merlot out of the wine rack.  Hell, she wasn’t pregnant anymore, she could drink.  The thought of it made her slam the bottle down on the counter and her hands fly to face to stop the tears that were suddenly spilling out of her eyes uncontrollably.  Not pregnant anymore.  The words tormented her, tearing out a piece of her soul.  She hadn’t even known she was pregnant to even consciously abstain from alcohol.  She realized that she had gotten “with child” the night of the dinner party – the night she and Nick had first met and had wild, unprotected sex under the table for God’s sakes! Drunk off their asses, but it feel oh so good! He had been so tender, yet forceful and the feel of his hands, tongue and body on her had been exquisite.  She felt a tingle down below at the thought of it, but quickly shook off the memory and wiped her tears on a nearby napkin.

She had wanted a baby for awhile now; longer than she had let herself realize and the fact that it had been Nick’s baby, the father would have been the man she loved with all her heart just ripped her heart in two.

Stop it, Carly! You can’t wallow, damn it! Carly opened the wine, poured some of the dark burgundy liquid into a wine glass and took a large sip.  She looked around the house and realized how quiet it was.  Derek was definitely not here.  Good.  He had left like she had told him to.  She hoped she would not see him for a long time.  In fact, it was time he moved out she realized.  They were beyond a shadow a doubt over with, so it was time they both moved on.

Carly moved towards the table and felt a little twinge of pain in her stomach.  The pain medication had obviously worn off, but she could tell that the pain overall was lessening and she could probably do without her meds now.  Besides, she thought as she held up her glass, she shouldn’t be drinking and taking the medication simultaneously anyway.

She walked over to the stereo and turned it on.  She flipped the dial until she landed on an “easy listening” station.  The end of Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me” was playing so she left it there.  As she walked towards the couch in the living room, “I’ll Never Break Your Heart” by the Backstreet Boys wafted out of her speakers.  She started laughing.  But, of course, that would start playing! She had half a mind to turn the station, but she thought, screw it, let it play.  As far as she knew, she and Nick were still together; at least she hoped they were—she didn’t know how mad he actually was—and she wanted to hear the beautiful voices of her beloved friends harmonizing wonderfully together.

It wasn’t until the next day that Carly got a phone call from Nick.  Nick had landed in Tennessee late that evening without a hitch.  The limo had picked him up and luckily; there wasn’t a fan in sight.   He was tired mentally and physically and just wanted to get to the hotel so he could unpack and unwind.

He had met with the guys and Dan at the studio that evening and they caught him up on what he had missed.  It was good to see them again, he thought, but he wished Carly was there with him.  The five of them ended up going out for drinks at Marty’s and stayed up past one in the morning drinking and sharing stories.  By the time he crashed in his hotel room it was 2:00 am.

“Hi, baby, how are you doing?” Nick asked Carly over the phone.  He had lots of time to think on the phone ride to Nashville and he had realized that he loved this woman no matter what.  Besides, she hadn’t cheated on him; she was a victim of her ex’s advances.  Derek was going down in flames and was desperate to hold onto a good thing.  Nick understood that; hell, he’d probably try to do the same thing if the situation were reversed.  He couldn’t blame him at all.  Carly was a good woman.  Derek had screwed it up though; he didn’t deserve her.  And you do, Nick? Nick had thought.  Well, he was no angel, but yeah, he had been good to her and would continue to be good to her.  He wouldn’t cheat on her or intentionally hurt her in any way.  He only wanted to make her as happy as she made him.  He knew he would call her soon and pour out his heart to her and let her know that he wasn’t holding any grudges.

Baby! He called me Baby! Carly’s heart sang.  She had been anxiously awaiting his call since last night and was so glad that a) he was calling her and b) he called her baby.  It meant he wasn’t mad anymore.

“Hi! It’s so good to hear from you, Nick!” She said enthusiastically.

Nick smiled.  It was good to hear her happy voice again.

“How are you feeling? And be honest.” He asked.

“Honestly, I’m fine.  The pain is almost all gone.”

“That’s great!  How are you doing, uh, mentally?” He didn’t want to make her relive the mental anguish, but he really wanted to know if she was all right.

“I’m okay, baby, thanks for asking.”  She smiled.  He really did care about her.  “I had a little bit of a hard time last night, though, especially since you weren’t around.  I really miss you!”

Nick smiled.  “Yeah, I do, too.  A lot!”

“It’s going to be a long three days.” She said.

“Tell me about it!”

“Yeah, but you’re going to be having fun recording.  I just have work and this empty house.”

“Empty house? Did Derek move out?” He asked, hopeful.

“He’s going to.  I threw him out after you left and I haven’t seen him since.  I think he’s afraid to come back!” She laughed.

Nick couldn’t stop smiling.  He was so happy that they were truly over.

“So, will he be moving out or you?”

“I don’t know.  I really want to stay here so I’m hoping he will move out.  He’s got a brother he can go live with, so I’m hoping he will do that.  I know we will have to talk soon, but I’m dreading it.”

“God, I really wish I could be there with you.”

“Me, too.  Thanks.  But enough of about me, I want to hear how your flight went and how things are going there!”

Nick laughed at her enthusiasm.  “The flight was fine – it was uneventful actually which is a good thing in my business!” He chuckled.  “The hotel is nice and the guys are great as usual.  I met with them and Dan last night and it was awesome catching up with them.  I’m excited about this album! It’s going to rock!  We just got to the studio and I’m waiting to start diving in with Dan and the guys.  Oh, they say hi by the way.  Brian and Leighanne want to have us over when we get back.”

“Great! I would love that! I’m so glad it’s going well, Nick.  Really I am.  Nicky?”

“Yeah.”

“About me and Derek…”

“Stop.  You don’t have to explain.  I know you weren’t trying to kiss Derek; he probably kissed you, right?”

“Yeah.  How’d you know?”

“Because I recognize a desperate man’s attempt to claim what used to be his.  Hey, I can’t fault him for trying.”

“God, Nick, you continually amaze me! Thank you for believing and trusting in me.” She was truly touched.

“Carly, you are the most wonderful woman I have ever met.  I’m so sorry about the baby, but maybe one of these days we can try to have another one.”  He hadn’t planned to say that, at least not over the phone, but it just kind of spilled out of him.

Carly was stunned into silence.  Did she hear him right? He wanted to try to have a baby?

Nick was quick to bridge the gap of silence.  He wasn’t ready to get into a long involved discussion right now.  “Look, sweetie, I would love to talk more, but the guys are calling me and I have to go.  I’ll be flying into LA Friday evening.  I’ll call you and we’ll make plans to get together then, okay?”

“That sounds wonderful.  I look forward to it.” She decided to let it go.  There would be a time to talk when he got back.

“Carly, promise me that you will call me if anything comes up or if you need anything.  Please.  I will have my cell nearby and if I don’t answer, just leave me a message and I’ll call you back as soon as I can.”

“I promise.”

Carly was in a state of shock.  Was that a pre-proposal? She didn’t think he would want to have a baby out of wedlock.  But marriage to Nick? Was that even possible? She hadn’t dreamed that it would be.  Of course she had hoped and prayed, but didn’t know he would ever consider it.  The thought of it made her heart sing and she floated on Cloud 9 for the rest of the day.

It was Thursday evening and Carly was going crazy.  A lot had happened in two days; Derek had moved out after they parted ways amicably, Rinda had called her out of the clear blue and they had had a long, emotional talk.  It was very cleansing and healing to have that conversation finally.  Rinda apologized for everything and asked how Carly was doing.  Apparently Derek had told Rinda about Carly’s miscarriage.  The conversation ended up being a positive one and the two friends decided to meet the next week for coffee and to “catch up”.  But the most interesting thing that was happening to Carly was that ever since Nick left, she had been incredibly horny! She suspected it was because of the grief she had been and was still somewhat experiencing from the miscarriage.  Her hormones were out of whack and she desperately needed the comfort of a man, and in this case, Nick.  Attempting to work was near impossible as she tried to get through her days with as much distraction from her state of mind as possible.  It was extremely difficult when she was surrounded with good-looking police officers though, including John, the man she had lusted over in years past.

Carly had had a confrontation with Rhonda regarding her sharing of too much information about her personal life with Rinda.  Rinda had shared that little tidbit with Carly.  Rhonda was apologetic, but Carly could tell that she wasn’t really sorry.  That’s just who she was; a revealer of secrets; a gossip-monger of sorts.  Carly decided to blow it off and just deal with her as little as possible.  That situation was the least of her worries.  She found herself turned on by the littlest things and she would come home with her mind full of delicious fantasies and her vagina covered in her pre-orgasmic wetness.

Shit, this was no good, she thought.  She was going frickin’ crazy! And when Nick called to say they were working all day Friday and he wouldn’t be home until late Saturday night, she made up her mind.  She was going to fly to Nashville to surprise in him in more ways than one.

“Okay, Leighanne, thank you so much.” Carly said over the phone to Brian’s wife.  She didn’t know her very well, but what she did know she liked very much.

“No problem, Carly.  I think what you’re doing is so cool! Nick will be thrilled.”

“You think so? He won’t be mad that I flew out there unannounced? And what about Brian, Howie and AJ? Will they mind?”

“Nah.  I’m going to call Brian right now and I’ll let you know if there is a problem, but I really don’t think there will be.”

“Thank you, Leighanne! Brian won’t tell Nick, right?”

“No, he’s good about keeping secrets.”

“Cool.  So, you really think this a good idea? I mean, I’ve never done anything this impulsive before.  This is so not like me! Will Nick mind?”

“Sweetie, I know Nick and the reason you’re going out there and believe me, he won’t mind!” She laughed and Carly joined her.  She was right.  Would Nick Carter object to sex with a woman, especially the woman he loved? Uh, no! But Leighanne didn’t know the real reason Carly was going to see Nick.  Carly couldn’t bring herself to admit to this good Christian woman that she was incredibly horny and she needed Nick inside of her NOW! She instead told her the rest of the truth; that she REALLY missed him and because they had been through some things together recently, she needed to be with him.

Leighanne was wonderful about it.  She didn’t ask any questions, she was just supportive and helpful and Carly would be forever grateful to her for that.

“And don’t forget, when you guys get back, we want to have you over, okay?” Leighanne said.

“Don’t worry, we’ll be there! Thanks again, Leighanne!”

Carly could not believe that she was on a flight to Nashville, Tennessee to surprise her boyfriend.  She had decided that this state of arousal had gone on long enough and now that he wouldn’t be back until Saturday night and she wouldn’t see him until maybe Sunday, that she couldn’t wait that long.  She longed desperately have his arms around her, his mouth on hers, his dick inside her… oh, God, she had to see him now!

She was anxious, nervous and excited all at the same time.  She fidgeted nervously in her seat and there was no way she could sleep.  Not only was she nervous, but also she was still so incredibly turned on by every little thing.  She had looked at the man sitting next to her once and even though he wasn’t that good looking, she could feel the familiar tingle of desire in her breasts and vagina and she had to try to switch her mind to think of something else—anything else.  Would baseball work? It always seemed to for guys.  But it wasn’t something she was wanted to think about, so her mind quickly wandered again.  Nick’s mouth was on her breasts, sucking and licking them into hard peaks as she writhed beneath him… DAMN IT! She had to do something! She grabbed the People Magazine out of her tote bag and started to flip through the pages.  Hmm… celebrities posing on the red carpet, out and about in public, who wore the best gown to the latest events, celebrities out with their kids, and then there was a profile story on Josh Duhamel.  Carly stared at the page.  What looked like a life-size picture of him seemed to be staring right at her—his incredible smile, perfect hair, pouty lips and muscular body.  The sound of paper fanning out onto the floor could be heard as Carly dropped the magazine at her feet and turned to stare out the window.  Oh, yeah, her iPod.  She pulled that out and began listening to some tunes.  It was successful for awhile; she sat there and hummed Shania Twain’s “Up” and U2’s “Vertigo” until BSB’s “Last Night You Saved My Life” came on:  It’s 3am, I can’t sleep, too late to call, this is not like me, but I’m still lifted from the tattoo on the small of your back, the angle of your chin when you were looking back.  Say God, you’re beautiful and I’m still calming down, like a one-night stand that had to stick around, but I’m still floating from the perfume you left on my sheets, I haven’t changed a thing since your goodbye to me…

And then her mind went there.  She could picture her and Nick lying on his bed, making love on his sheets; he had even commented on how he loved having her perfume on his sheets… hmm, a tattoo.  Maybe she could get one of those one of these days.  She and Nick could go to together and get something tasteful.  She laughed.  Her parents would freak!

The man next to her turned to see what was so funny as she covered her mouth with her hand, still smiling and turned to look out the window again.
