“It’s a weird world
Sent a message to a GI in the desert
Said “Thank you man, for bringing another dawn”
Back here is her and me and we’re having our first baby
He’s out there taking ‘em on
It’s a weird world and it won’t slow down
It’s a weird world no matter how you roll it…”
“Oh my God, Olivia!” Nick grabbed her as soon as he saw her slumping towards the ground and caught her underneath her arms just in time.
Kevin rushed over to her and he and Nick half-carried her over to the nearest chair. She was absolutely gone; passed out. She slumped in the chair, eyes closed, body limp and Kevin and Nick were sick with worry and so were the other guys.
“What happened?” Kevin asked Nick.
Nick shook his head. “I don’t know. Right after I dipped her and pulled her up, she passed out. I’m sorry, man, I didn’t mean to hurt her. I hope she’s okay…” his heart was beating out of his chest and he was frantically praying she would be alright.
Slowly Olivia started gaining consciousness and awoke to five pairs of eyes staring at her.
“What happened…?” she asked groggily. Was that Kevin and Nick? Her head was pounding and she was feeling sick again.
“Kevin, I think I’m going to be sick…” she said and Kevin helped her up and barely got her to the bathroom before her dinner was evident in the sink.
Kevin came out a few minutes later.
“Guys, I’m going to take Olivia to the emergency room. I think she’s really sick.” Kevin’s face was pale; it was obvious he was really worried about her.
“I’m going, too.” Nick said without thinking. Kevin stopped him with his hand and shook his head.
“This isn’t the time…”
“It isn’t about that, Kev. I’m just concerned, that’s all.”
“Okay, do what you want.”
AJ, Brian and Howie seemly equally concerned and Kevin promised to call them to give them her diagnosis.
Kevin helped a weak Olivia into the car and she fell back against the seat, glad to have the support. Her head was spinning and she felt like shit.
Nick followed them to the hospital in his sports car and they all arrived there within 20 minutes.
Kevin checked them in and filled out the necessary paperwork while Olivia sat next to Nick, trying to stay awake. The champagne was a bad idea and whatever she ate was, too, she thought. Sitting next to Nick was an equally bad idea. The night had started off good, but ended up horribly. What the hell was wrong with her?
Forty-five minutes later Olivia was ushered into one of the examination rooms. Dr. Ramsey was a tall, black woman who took blood and urine samples from Olivia and examined her thoroughly. The doctor asked Olivia a series of questions, which she marked down on a chart and then she checked her blood pressure and vital signs.
Dr. Ramsey left the room and came back several minutes later. Olivia was a wreck. She just wanted to go home and go to bed, but first she wanted to hear what the good doctor had to say.
“Well, Olivia, I have your test results.”
“Is it food poisoning?”
“No, it’s not food poisoning. It’s much more permanent. You are pregnant.”
‘Pregnant!’ Olivia thought. ‘I can’t be pregnant!’ Her mind raced and she thought about her birth control. She had been on “the pill” for years, but her doctor recommended she try “the patch” recently and apparently either she used it wrong or it didn’t work! And Nick had never used a condom because both times they were too caught up in the moment to think of it and Kevin definitely hadn’t their first time (due to the fact she seduced him at The Pier), but he had a couple of times after that until they got tested for HIV and STDs. Since both of their test results came out negative, Olivia was on the patch and they were in a monogamous relationship, they had stopped using them because it was so nice to be “skin to skin”, but now here she was over a month later “with child” as they say.
"I could have sworn I had my period a few days ago.” Olivia told the doctor.
“Well, it’s rare, but some women do menstruate when they’re pregnant. However, I suspect that it might have been just a heavy discharge.” Olivia did remember that she thought it was a weird period, a lot lighter than usual and so soon after her last one…
Damn! What was she going to do? Oh, God… was it Nick or Kevin’s baby? She didn’t know.
“Well, congratulations, Olivia. You appear to be healthy, but I would consult your doctor as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.”
Olivia nodded, still numb from the news. “Can I find out my due date?”
“Sure. Do you know the first day of your last period?” Dr. Ramsey looked at Olivia’s chart.
“Uh… I’m not sure because I thought I just had my period. I guess the one before that started around…” Olivia thought about it. “June 3 I think…”
Dr. Ramsey entered the information into her computer. “Then it looks like your due date will be March 10.”
March 10. Or it could be March 17. Who the hell knows? She had slept with Kevin for the first time on June 18 and with Nick on June 24. And she knew she wouldn’t be able to find out who the father was until the baby was born. She remembered a legal case where a man sued his fiancé to have a test performed to determine paternity on the unborn fetus since he knew she had cheated on him, but the judge ruled in the mother’s favor because it was determined that it was too dangerous to have the procedure done on the unborn fetus. It was, however, fairly safe once the baby was born to perform a blood test to determine paternity.
Oh God, she would have to wait almost nine long months to find out… what would Kevin and Nick say? Would they wait around and how the hell was she going to tell them? Most likely it was Kevin’s child and she hoped it was, but she couldn’t be absolutely sure.
But was she even happy about having a baby? Olivia thought about it and then smiled. It would be wonderful— she had always wanted at least two kids, but ideally she would have been married first. Well, obviously life didn’t always work out as planned. She would be 31 when the baby was born, and she felt she was mature enough to handle raising a child, even if she had to raise it alone. But would she have to be alone? Would Kevin be willing to stick around even if it wasn’t his baby? She didn’t know, but she hoped so. What if it was Nick’s? Oh God, she didn’t even want to think about that right now.
All she wanted to do was go home and sleep and deal with it in the morning, but unfortunately she would still have to face the two men waiting for her in the waiting room now.
When Olivia walked out, Kevin and Nick looked at her expectantly. She smiled weakly at them.
“Well?” Kevin asked impatiently, still very worried about her.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be fine. It was nothing.” Olivia tried to reassure him. “ I’m really tired. Can you take me home?” Olivia looked at Kevin, but she saw Nick out of the corner of her eye.
“Of course, but what did the doctor say?” Kevin was persistent.
“I promise I’ll tell you later. I’m sorry, I just really want to go home now. Please.” She was being intentionally evasive. There was no way she was going to confront her two lovers with “Guess what? I’m pregnant!” and she didn’t want to lie to them.
“Okay…” Kevin looked hesitant and looked over at Nick.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” Nick asked, still pessimistic about her health.
Olivia nodded, tears forming behind her eyes. “Thanks for coming, I really appreciate it, but I’ll be fine.” she knew she had to go now before Niagara Falls hit. She could be carrying Nick’s baby…
Olivia took Kevin’s arm and they left Nick wondering at her state of mind, as well as her state of health. She didn’t look fine, she looked sick. What was wrong with her and why wouldn’t she tell them? Maybe it was something really serious. He prayed it wasn’t. He didn’t want anything to happen to her whether they were together or not. He still really cared about her.
Olivia pretended to be asleep on the drive home to avoid telling Kevin anything, but the truth was she wanted to hide her tears from him. It had been a physically and mentally emotional evening and she had a lot of feelings to sort through and decisions to make. Her life just changed again for the second time in over a month and even though she felt it would ultimately be for the better, right now it just seemed like her world was falling apart.
Tomorrow would end her idyllic time with Kevin since he was leaving for Florida in the morning for nine long months. Nine months. How ironic. She would be pregnant the entire time he was gone. The tears fell as she thought about how he would miss her entire pregnancy and get back just in time for the birth of “their” child. She thought of the long months ahead and felt so alone…
Later than evening when Olivia and Kevin were asleep in bed, Olivia awoke to a sharp pain in her stomach and she sat up, startled and terrified. Oh no! She couldn’t be having a miscarriage! She suddenly realized how much she wanted this baby. Just as quickly as the pain arrived, it was gone and Olivia realized it was nothing; she and the baby were going to be okay. Looking over at Kevin sleeping next to her, she smiled at his lovely profile, his face so peaceful looking, his beautiful body relaxed. He had no idea how much his life was going to change when she told him the words, “I’m pregnant”. How would he react? Would he be happy? Would he realize that it may not be his baby? Oh, those damn tears again! She should have known she was pregnant since she had been so frickin’ emotional lately and was throwing up and had sore breasts and… what an idiot she was! Olivia laughed through the tears and laid back down to try to sleep knowing she had to face one of the most difficult days in her life tomorrow.
